TUMKUR, MAY 30. Harnahalli Ramaswamy, senior Congress leader and writer, led many writers in paying tributes to Poornima, who was the editor of Nagemugulu, a Kannada humour monthly magazine published from Tumkur, on Sunday.
Poornima died of cancer on September 24, 2003. A mega humour event was organised here in her memory. Inaugurating the event, Mr. Ramaswamy said Kannada literature was known for "pure humour" in the past. Unfortunately, the number of humour writers and readers was declining fast. The Kannada print media had hardly encouraged humour writers. Articles by them were published rarely in newspapers and magazines. The situation warranted publication of magazines dedicated to humour. He lauded Poornima for launching Nagemugulu on July 27, 1999, in Tumkur. It had a circulation of 8,000 copies, he added.
Mr. Ramaswamy said: "We owe her the responsibility of ensuring that the magazine survives forever. I am happy that her daughter, Rashmi, has been editing the magazine with the support of her father, H.S. Ramanna. We should help them carry on Poornima's legacy.''
Hiremagalooru Kannan, who gave away prizes to the winners of the State-level "Hasya lekhana spardhe", said the magazine was being read by over three lakh people every month. Poornima had done a great service to Kannada humour literature, he added.
Bhuvaneshwari Hegde, humour writer from Mangalore, M.S. Narasimha Murthy, R. Basavaraju, Annapoorna Venkatananjappa, Kavita Krishna, B.H. Ramakumari, Gowdankatte Thimmaiah, S. Viswanath, and S.N. Sridhar, writers, hailed Poornima for her contribution to Kannada journalism. Mr. Ramaswamy unveiled a portrait of Poornima to which floral tributes were offered. Kumuda Jagannath of K.R. Nagar in Mysore district bagged the first prize in the "Poornima Memorial Hasya Lekhana Spardhe" for her essay "Viggu, Higgu, and Muggu''. The second, third and the fourth prizes went to the essays, "Chowkasi Chickannaiah'' by D.S. Sridhar of Kinnigoli in Dakshina Kannada district, "Ellemeerida Samparka Tantragnana Avishkara'' by H. Lokeshwari of Bangalore, and "Fifty-Fifty'' by Sumati N. Krishna Rao, Tarangini of Tumkur. B.A. Chidambaraiah, chairman of the organising committee of the event, welcomed the gathering.
